“Thank you @newfrontierpublishing for sending me this beautiful new book by @tull_suwannakit which I am unable to call a picture book or a graphic novel, but which I know to feel like a precious hardcover diary in my hand, an almanac for survival, both practical and spiritually, passed from the grandmother in this story to her grandchildren and now to me.
It is achingly gorgeous to behold, the illustrations and the weight of the paper, a book about environmental change, the importance of intergenerational bonds, sacrifice and ultimately a story of hope for anyone who has been displaced or had the courage to cross waters to come to a new land and make a new home.

The entire book has taken me around 7 years to create, the longest I have ever undertaken on any project to date. From finding the suitable ingredients for the story, to developing the multi -layered story telling, which eventually, become a blend of graphic novel, picture book, and diary entries. These, together with countless revisions of the manuscript and finding the right home for it, contributed to the prolonged creation of the book.
After a great flood, a grandmother, her two grandchildren and their pet rabbit must learn to survive living on their rooftop garden, relying on scarce resources and limited space. Days turn into weeks, and weeks into months, but through life lessons and words of wisdom, hope emerges.
Higher Ground is an inspiring coming-of-age tale of resilience, courage and spirit that illuminates how life can be beautiful even in the darkest of times.
