Hodder Children’s Books will publish a series of young fiction and sticker and activity books aimed at 6- to 9-year-olds based on the series. Bottersnikes & Gumbles is set to air on CBBC in July. David Walliams apologises to children for not responding to fan mail as his post has been stolen

April 18, 2016 By achuka Leave a Comment

David Walliams, the comedian and children’s author, has apologised to young fans for not replying to their letters because his post has been stolen.

The Little Britain star and Britain’s Got Talent judge revealed that Scotland Yard has told him that he was the victim of a mail thief.

He told his 1.6 million Twitter followers that “a large box of letters” from youngsters sent to him via his publisher HarperCollins was among post that had been taken.

Walliams, 44, apologised to fans who had not received a reply to letters they had sent because he does “endeavour to reply to everyone”

The article includes some sample letters and his replies (to complaints) from a previous postbag.

BBC Launches iPlayer Kids app

April 13, 2016 By achuka Leave a Comment

Children’s television was placed “front and centre” of the BBC’s future plans by senior executives at the launch of a dedicated iPlayer Kids app [yesterday].

Speaking at the launch of the new designated app, director general Tony Hall said that children’s content was “so important to the BBC and what the BBC offers to this country”.

His comments come after speculation last year that cBeebies and CBBC could face an online-only future as part of cost-cutting ahead of charter renewal at the end of this year. BBC3 was made online only last year, saving the corporation £30m a year.

Alice Webb, director of BBC Children’s, said the corporation was committed to broadcast as well as online content for “as long as children are watching it and the majority of viewing is still coming through those channels”.

Children’s programmes are the most-watched genre on BBC iPlayer.

Children Now Viewing More Online Than ON TV

January 26, 2016 By achuka Leave a Comment

This year has seen a major shift in UK children’s media use with time spent online overtaking TV viewing for the first time ever, according to the latest 2016 CHILDWISE Monitor Report.

Tablet ownership also soared this year – up by 50 per cent from last year. Just six years after the UK release of the iPad, tablets have swept into children’s lives, with two in three (67 per cent) now having their own device.

The new data shows that YouTube has taken centre stage in children’s lives this year to become the place they turn to for entertainment, music, games, TV programmes, instruction and advice. Half use the site every day, almost all do so on occasion.

The majority of children who use YouTube visit the site to access music videos (58 per cent). Around half of users keep themselves entertained with funny content on YouTube (52 per cent). Around a third watch gaming content, vlogs/blogs, TV programmes or ‘how to’ videos.

Children are also going online more in their bedrooms. Three in four children (73 per cent) can now access the internet in their room, up from two in three (63 per cent) last year.

The 2016 CHILDWISE Monitor is a comprehensive annual report looking at five to 16-year-olds media consumption, purchasing and social habits as well as key behaviour. More than 2000 children in schools across the United Kingdom completed in-depth online surveys for the report.

BBC to turn Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy into a TV series

November 4, 2015 By achuka Leave a Comment

guardiansmallThe BBC is to turn Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy into a TV series, giving both existing fans and a new generation the chance to experience the tale of parallel universes, Daemons and armoured polar bears.

Pullman has given his blessing to the project, and is helping recruit a writer to produce a faithful adaptation of the novels, which centre on a girl called Lyra living in a parallel version of Oxford.

Producers have promised to sound “every note” in the much-loved trilogy and stay true to the source material.

Pullman said the many adaptations of the books on screen, radio and stage had been a “constant source of pleasure” but shows such as Game of Thrones and the Wire had shown that TV had the capacity to reach “depths of characterisation and heights of suspense by taking the time for events to make their proper impact and for consequences to unravel”.
