365 First Words – Little Word Whizz by Dr. Meredith L. Rowe ill. Monika Forsberg

ACHUKA Book of the Day 6 Jan 2022

A rich, visual encyclopaedia of first words from a London-based Swedish illustrator.

A companion title to An Interesting Word for Every Day of the Year (which we also recommend), this title introduces first concepts including colours, numbers and shapes, as well as parts of the body, things that go, animals and the world around us.

Compiled in consultation with a Harvard Professor of Early Learning and Development, who is particularly interested in uncovering how variations in children’s early communicative environments contribute to language development, it’s a book that will be valued in all Early Years settings and in households with young children eagerly developing their speaking, listening and observational skills.

A simply delightful collection of new poems for the very young. A must-have for anyone involved in early years education. Single-poet collections of this kind usually have four or five stand-out poems with the remainder a bit so-so. That’s not the case here. There’s only one somewhat weak poem in this book—a short counting poem which seems out of place with others in the collection, but maybe I’m missing something. The other 15 are superb and it’s hard to pick a favourite but I particularly liked ‘Hide and Seek’:

hide in a slipper
hide in a shoe
hide in a bottle
of PVA glue

Hardback picture-book poetry collections don’t come along very often, so treasure this one. Highly recommended for childminders, nurseries, Reception classes and, of course, parents of young children.

The Government should stop intervening in early education

September 12, 2013 By achuka Leave a Comment

An extract from a letter published in the Telegraph yesterday, which signed by over 125 distinguished experts in early childhood…

Research does not support an early start to testing and quasi-formal teaching, but provides considerable evidence to challenge it. Very few countries have a school starting age as young as four, as we do in England. Children who enter school at six or seven – after several years of high quality nursery education – consistently achieve better educational results as well as higher levels of wellbeing. The success of Scandinavian systems suggests that many intractable problems in English education – such as the widening gap in achievement between rich and poor, problems with boys’ literacy, and the ‘summerborns’ issue – could be addressed by fundamentally re-thinking our early years policies.
Instead of pursuing an enlightened approach informed by global best practice, successive ministers have prescribed an ever-earlier start to formal learning. This can only cause profound damage to the self-image and learning dispositions of a generation of children. We as a sector are now uniting to demand a stop to such inappropriate intervention and that early years policy-making be put in the hands of those who truly understand the developmental needs and potential of young children.
