After comments he made during an event at the Edinburgh Festival were deemed misogynistic, Anthony McGowan explores the issue further on his blog…
At some stage during the debate, Jenny Downham said that I was a misogynist – I presume for pointing out the fact that the production of YA literature is dominated by women. And I suppose the fact that I criticised some YA, became linked to that, as though I was asserting that YA is shit ‘because women do it’.
The misogynist accusation was repeated in the Guardian. It’s the kind of slur that’s very hard to shift from one’s back.
‘Anthony McGowan, who’s he?’
‘Oh, you know, he’s that misogynist.’
‘So, that Anthony McGowan, what’s he all about then?’
‘He hates women.’
‘Anthony McGowan … isn’t he a writer?
‘No, I don’t think so – he’s that misogynist.’
They’ll put it on my gravestone.
