Orchard Books has announced the acquisition of two historical fiction titles looking at the life of the young Cleopatra written by Lucy Coats to publish in 2015.
Rosalind Turner, Senior Editor, acquired UK & Commonwealth rights (exc. Canada) from Sophie Hicks at Ed Victor Ltd. She says, “Everyone at Orchard was captivated by the idea of the untold story of Cleopatra, and Lucy Coats is the perfect author to lead us into this evocative world. I’m delighted to be working with Lucy on these terrific new books.”
Sophie Hicks: “Lucy’s vivid storytelling brings the young Cleopatra to life and I am delighted that it will be published by Orchard.”
The first book, provisionally entitled Young Cleopatra, will publish in Spring 2015 with the sequel following later the same year; both titles will be published in paperback original with simultaneous e-publications alongside. The books will look at the young Cleopatra’s turbulent youth, picking up her story as she takes flight from Alexandria and finds shelter in the temple of Isis.
When Orchard Books was formed twenty-seven years ago Lucy was one of the company’s first editors. She changed career paths to become an author and her first book, One Hungry Baby, was published by Orchard in 1993. Since then Lucy has gone on to write over twenty books for children. Lucy commented: “I am hugely excited to have ‘come home’ with these new novels, and can’t wait to work with the whole wonderful Orchard team.”
