Best-selling children’s author GP Taylor has urged people to help Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Mind’s £20,000 appeal.
The ex-vicar, 55, who lives in Scarborough, said he one tried to take his own life and fears that without the charity others may not be as fortunate as he was.
In 1994, while a police officer, he was seriously assaulted by a gang and sustained both physical and mental injuries.
Dogged by depression and nightmares, he took up writing while serving as Vicar of Cloughton, but even at the height of his success, he could not escape from the grip of mental illness.
Late one Sunday evening Graham decided to kill himself. His attempt was thwarted and with the help of his family and support workers he made a slow recovery.
He said: “In my darkest hour I was living in hell. I couldn’t see a way out. I’ve only managed to get through it with the help of my family, counselling and support for my mental health.”
