Erik Blegvad, illustrator, was born on March 3, 1923. He died on January 14, 2014, aged 90
Erik Blegvad illustrated more than 100 children’s stories including Mary Norton’s [Bedknob sequence] and the fairy stories of Hans Christian Andersen. His minutely detailed brush and pen drawings recalled the myths and stories that his grandfather had told him during his boyhood in Denmark. He was described by the American writer and artist Edward Gorey as one of the best of his generation… “When my lucky side is working I find myself concentrated at the tip of my pen, which to my delight proceeds to create people, objects and worlds I never knew existed,” he wrote in his charming, illustrated autobiography Self-Portrait (1979).
