Bad Nana 2: All The Fun Of The Fair by Sophy Henn

November 22, 2019 By achuka Leave a Comment

ACHUKA Book of the Day Fri 22 Nov 2019

The second book in the wickedly funny LOLLIES shortlisted series for ages six and up.

Hi! I’m Jeanie – 7 3/4 years old, and a BIG fan of badges.

BAD NANA is one of my three grandmas (yes, three). Of course, “Bad Nana” isn’t actually her actual name – but it’s what everyone has been calling her for MILLIONS of years. If I had MY way, I would call her “Fun Nana”, because she is actually brilliant. Yes, she’s a bit NAUGHTY sometimes, but in an EXCELLENT way.

Every Child A Song by Nicola Davies ill Marc Martin

November 19, 2019 By achuka Leave a Comment

ACHUKA Book of the Day Wed 20 Nov 2019

An introduction to the universal rights that every child is entitled to under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, using the metaphor of song.

The book opens with the arrival of a newborn and its unique ‘song’, then pans out to explore all the essential things that every song needs to thrive – love, protection, a home, a name, the chance to explore and learn. In the latter half of the book, the issues of child labour, exploitation and war are sensitively introduced to emphasise that we all must play our part in championing children’s rights and offering support to those who need it most.

Time For Lights Out by Raymond Briggs

November 14, 2019 By achuka Leave a Comment

ACHUKA Book of the Day Thu 21 Nov 2019

Time for Lights Out is a collection of short pieces, some funny, some melancholy, some remembering his wife who died young, others about the joy of grandchildren, of walking the dog… He looks back at his schooldays and his time as an evacuee during the war, and remembers his parents and the house in which he grew up.

“A mesmerising jumble of jokes, drawings and elderly gripes… All human life – and death – is here in this lucky dip of memories and fears, irritations and idle thoughts… [Time For Lights Out] has black humour galore…and, as always, Briggs’s drawings have a touch of magic about them, conjuring human beings and their foibles out of a few precious lines.” Craig Brown

October 24, 2019 By achuka Leave a Comment

ACHUKA Book of the Day Thu 12 Dec 2019

Welsh-flavoured magic, folklore and fantasy…
Second book in The Clockwork Crow trilogy…

After rescuing Tomas from enchantment, orphan Seren Rhys is enjoying her first summer at Plas-y-Fran. But as autumn arrives, it brings with it a mysterious new governess who seems intent on drawing Tomas away from Seren and his family. Dangerous figures from a bewitched toy carousel stalk the house and, fearing the worst, Seren calls on the clockwork crow to help her. But can he reach her in time, and will Tomas be able to escape the magical creatures threatening to ensnare him, led by the Velvet Fox?

“Fisher writes with elegant poise. The Velvet Fox will charm and frighten readers of ten and up in equal measures.” Philip Womack LITERARY REVIEW
