This extraordinary series of biographies for children is now in its tenth year and has reached volume 150, and this of you who will know my wider interests will not be surprised to hear that I am delighted such a special volume’s subject is a contemporary photographer.

Born in Connecticut, USA, little Annie loved art from an early age and was encouraged by her mother to pursue art. She went to art college to become a painter, but after trying out photography, she couldn’t put her camera down.
In her twenties she became the Rolling Stone magazine’s chief photographer which kickstarted a decades-long career, during which she has captured some of the most iconic images ever. Annie was also the first woman to have a feature exhibition at the US National Portrait Gallery, and the Library of Congress has declared her to be a Living Legend. Her dramatic, playful and quirky photography has redefined what it means to be an artist.
In the style of the series, the book includes extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of Annie’s life.
