The Murderer’s Ape by Jakob Wegeliua

September 3, 2018 By achuka Leave a Comment

NOW IN PAPERBACK

Waterstones Children’s Book of the Month, September 2018

‘I don’t know when I last read a book with such pure and unalloyed pleasure. It’s ingenious, it’s moving, it’s charming, it’s beautiful, it’s exciting, and most importantly the characters are people I feel I know like old friends. I thank Jakob Wegelius wholeheartedly for giving me several hours of joy’ — Philip Pullman

‘Prize-winning Swedish author Jakob Wegelius is that rare combination, a compelling storyteller who illustrates his own prose to perfection, the constant underestimation of Sally’s abilities, the many eccentric companions she encounters and the rollercoaster narrative offer plenty of entertainment in a tale that reaches a most satisfying conclusion’– School Library Journal

‘Rich in unforgettable characters… The plot is totally immersive, making it very hard to stop reading… The Murderer’s Ape is going to last – one of those books you’ll still be reading may years from now. That’s the best compliment I can give’ — Daniel Hahn, Scoop

The Murderer’s Ape by Jakob Wegelius

June 30, 2017 By achuka Leave a Comment

There are many things to look forward to this coming autumn (2017) and this is certainly one of them. Adam Freudenheim the publisher at Pushkin Press writes: “I love this book! It’s different. It’s special. It’s original! I fell in love with The Murderer’s Ape when I read it in a single day last summer; my 12-year-old son read it in a weekend and told me he didn’t want it to end – and he still can’t stop talking about it months later.”

The proof copy I have dipped into would certainly seem to bear that out and I shall look forward to updating this post nearer the time of publication.

“The cast is large but each character is so richly drawn and wonderfully constructed that there’s absolutely no chance of the reader becoming confused. Subtle shifts in the dynamics between them are beautifully written, with real significance given to the different motivations of the villains.” Jon Biddle
“The gradual strengthening of the friendship between Sally and Bernie is beautifully crafted as mutual trust and understanding develops. Sally’s empathy and gentle nature oozes from every page. There are times when Sally’s morals are put to the test and when, despite her conscience, she must do what is needed to protect herself or to protect others. Her desire to do what is right is sometimes at odds with the need to do what she must and, again, this is told in heart-wrenching detail.” ReadingZone

Follow-up to The Murderer’s Ape.

When Sally Jones and The Chief discover a curious rose-shaped necklace hidden onboard their beloved Hudson Queen, it’s the start of another perilous adventure for the seafaring gorilla and her faithful friend. Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, they set sail for Glasgow, but there fall into the clutches of one of the city’s most ruthless gangs, commanded by a fearsome smuggler queen who will stop at nothing to snatch the necklace for herself. Held prisoner hundreds of miles from friendship and safety, Sally Jones must use all her strength, determination and compassion to escape and unravel the mysterious story of the False Rose – a twisting tale leading all the way from Lisbon to Shetland and the South Seas.

2019 UKLA Book Award Winners

July 13, 2019 By achuka Leave a Comment

The UKLA Book Awards are the only awards to be judged entirely by teachers. The awards are presented to books that are considered to “enhance all aspects of literacy learning”.  The judging process ensures teachers are able to share the books with their classes and discover what genuinely works with young readers in each of the three age categories. Judgements are therefore soundly based on pupil response.

For an unprecedented second year in a row the 3-6 category has been won by Morag Hood. She said “I am so honoured that I Am Bat has been chosen as the winner, and to win for the second time is just incredible! What better accolade than from the teachers who know and understand children the most. It fills me with joy to know that my little bat is being used in classrooms and, I hope, helping to encourage a life-long love of reading.”

Equally unprecedented was the fact that the judges, after intense debate, decided to award a Highly Commended in each of the three age categories to books that were very different but equally valuable and too good not to be specially recognised. So the Newbery Medal winning After the Fall by Dan Santat has been Highly Commended in the 3-6 category with S.E Durrant’s Running On Empty in the 7-11 and Carnegie medal winning Elizabeth Acevado’s verse novel The Poet X in the 12-16.

This has been a triumphant year for poetry. Indeed, the verse novel Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds won the 12-16 category, while The Explorer by Katherine Rundell took the 7-11 category.

The 2019 awards were presented at a special ceremony on July 12th at the UKLA International Conference, Sheffield Institute of Education, Sheffield Hallam University. Student teachers from 20 universities around the UK take part in Shadowing the awards and read and use the shortlisted books on teaching practice in schools before having their own online vote to select their own winners. Mini Grey‘s The Last Wolf was the 3-6 winner and S.E Durrant’ Running on Empty won the 7-11 student vote too. The National Education Union sponsors  student shadowers to attend the conference and they also announced and presented their awards at the ceremony.

10 teachers nominated from the 58 involved in the shortlisting, who came from Midlands region around Sheffield, formed the final judging panel and had the challenging task of reading all the shortlisted books in all three age categories, which meant nursery teachers reading fiction for teenagers and secondary teachers reading picture books.

Research carried out by members of UKLA (Cremin et al 2008) clearly demonstrated the links between teachers’ knowledge of children’s books and the likelihood of pupils becoming successful readers. Despite this evidence, teachers are seldom given time to read new books or funding to purchase them when they do.

2019 UKLA Book Awards Longlists

September 10, 2018 By achuka Leave a Comment

LONGLISTS ANNOUNCED FOR THE 2019 UKLA BOOK AWARDS

The UKLA Selection Panel, chaired by outgoing Chair Lynda Graham, have whittled down the 372 publisher submissions to arrive at a set of longlists, which feature books in translation, poetry, verse novels and nonfiction. They were pleased to highlight exciting debut authors as well as established and familiar names in children’s literature. Of particular note is the success of small publishing houses like Sweet Apple Publishing, Laurence King, Pushkin Press, Barrington Stoke, Otter-Barry Books, Gecko Press and Tiny Owl. The new Chair of the awards Chris Lockwood says: “the quality of the record number of submissions this year was of a particularly high standard and the panel had no easy task, but we are confident that the teachers and schools involved in the judging will benefit enormously from the impact of these quality texts in their schools” All of the books exemplify the award criteria of writing which offers language rich in layered meanings, imaginative expression and exciting vocabulary. Where present, high quality illustration is also an important feature of the chosen texts.
