~ Terry Deary

Biographical Sketch

William Terence ("Terry") Deary was born on January 3rd, 1946, in Sunderland, north-east England and went to Monkwearmouth Grammar School. The family home was close to the beach and the fairground. He has spent most of his adult life in this region, and now lives in a former mining village in Durham--with his wife, Jenny; a 19-year-old daughter, Sara; and "an assortment of dogs, geese, sheep and horses."

He first started work for the Electricity Board as a management trainee when he was 18, but adds, "Really my first job was helping in Dad's butcher shop from about the age of 3." For many years, alongside his writing, he was working in the theatre and as a drama teacher.

His first book contract (but not the first writing he was paid for, as you will discover when you read the Authorfile) was with Samuel French in 1976 for a book called "Teaching through Theatre" – a collection of educational plays. He was already the author of many children's books before the success of the Horrible Histories made it possible for him to become a full-time writer in 1994.
