I have just read this as one of my holiday books.Don't be swept away by some of the ecstatic reviews-it is essentially hokum; high-class, enjoyable hokum,to be sure, but hokum nonetheless. It is exciting and deeply gothic, but don't look for gritty reality, or indeed any resemblance to real life. Some reviewers seem to me to have taken it far too seriously-what we have here is a ripping yarn.
