  • LIZ ROSE's review:

I really liked this book, especially enjoying the description of the ghetto which built up atmosphere. I felt like I was there. As regards the characters Shylock's deterioration was particularly well drawn and engaged my emotions. I would have liked to have seeen the relationship between Dalilah and Jehuda further explored although it was perhaps more realistic not to do this.

Jessica's character was also thought-provoking, making me wonder what I would have done in her position. The portrayal of the relationship between Jews and Christians was also very interesting. The whole book made me want to read/see "The Merchant of Venice," something I have never done.

Brian Murdoch's comments at the end of the book were particularly useful in exploring and explaining some of the issues raised. I think the book will appeal to those who like historical novels but will need some promotion to find it's teenage readership, I think adults would enjoy the novel too.
