The BookTrust Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates the body of work of an author or illustrator who has made an outstanding contribution to children’s literature. The award, now in just its third year, was established in 2015, when the inaugural recipient was Shirley Hughes. Last year the award went to Judith Kerr. Briggs is the first man to receive the accolade.
The adjudicating panel making the selection consisted of Nicolette Jones, current laureate Chris Riddell, Cressida Cowell, John Agard, Shami Chakrabati and BookTrust’s CEO Diana Gerald.
Both Diana Gerald and Nicolette Jones gave short talks before handing over to Chris Riddell to formally present the heart-shaped award.
Briggs is not given to public speaking so had provided BookTrust with the following: “It’s lovely to be given an award for all my life achievements, Drawing, telling stories and sharing these adventures is something I’ve always been passionate about. Being awarded the BookTrust Lifetime Achievement Award is an incredible honour and I’m so glad I’ve been able to make such an impression on people.”
He did though say a few informal words after being handed the award by Chris Riddell (see the video clip).
