My favourite book when child: The Wind in the Willows when I was small; Gerald Durrell books when I was a middle-aged child; Gormanghast when I was a teenager.
My favourite fictional character: Steerpike out of Gormeghast
Books that inspired me to become a writer: The poems of Bertolt Brecht. All books with an unlikely happy ending.
My favourite author: Too many to mention. David Almond is marvellous. I love Peter Ackroyd, too. And of course, Gabriel Garcia Maquez
My ideal reading position: Sitting, standing or lying.
My usual means of marking a place in a book: I bend the corner of the page down (what an evil question!)
My favourite time of year: Spring

My best time for working: Morning
The first piece of work I was paid for was: 'The Bald Angel', a radio play. Brian Glover starred.
My favourite TV show: I just love comedy on the TV. The League of Gentlemen was fantastic. I enjoyed Black Books and Gimme Gimme Gimme and the Fast Show.
My favourite song: This comes and goes. At the moment I'm listening to Blur's Greatest Hits, which I got for Christmas - great band.
My favourite actor: I don't have one.
The creature comfort I would most unwillingly relinquish: My wife. Whiskey. Music. Coffee. The list is endless. Freshly squeezed orange juice.
My favourite sweet food: Cheesecake - the real echt New York kind. I make it myself. You have to use two tablespoonfuls of real vanilla essence.
My favourite savory food: Good dry cured bacon.
My typical bedtime is: IHalf eleven
My favourite year of childhood: In me or in other people? In me, 8 - 9. In other people, four.
My mousemat design: little.com - a Ralph Steadman illustration from an Andersen Press book.
The tidiest place in my home is: Wherever my wife has just passed through.
The untidiest place in my home is: My study - she's not allowed in there.
The working tool I would least like to do without: My computer - I bless it daily.
