Books that inspired me to become a writer: Treasure Island perhaps? Although I was an avid reader, it wasn't books that inspired me to become a writer, it was events, people and places. However, my mother's passion for Dickens must have influenced me greatly.
My favourite fictional character: Pip in Great Expectations
My favourite author: Oh Gosh! There are so many. If I must choose, then Charles Dickens and Robert Louis Stephenson.
My ideal reading position: My grandfather would have said, sitting upright with the light coming over your left shoulder. Position is less important to me than having the the peace and quiet when I'm reading.
My usual means of marking a place in a book: Bus tickets, book marks, anything - but not folding over the corner of the page.

The first piece of work I was paid for was: A BBC radio broadcast I wrote and presented about my return to India when I was seventeen, making sound recordings at every step of the way for their archives.
