Biographical Sketch

Adele Geras was born in Jerusalem on March 15th, 1944. Her father was in the Colonial Office, so she moved around all over the place while she was very young: Nigeria, North Borneo, the Gambia... But I she attended boarding-school in England (Roedean) from the age of 11.

After Roedean she graduated from St Hilda's College, Oxford. She has worked as an actress and as a French teacher. Her first published children's book was Tea at Mrs Manderby's (A Hamish Hamilton Gazelle Book, 1976). Her books have won the following Awards:

  • The Sydney Taylor Award (USA) for 'My Grandmother's Stories.' (1991)
  • The National Jewish Book Award (USA) for 'Golden Windows.' (1994)
  • Smith/Doorstop Poetry Pamphlet competition (1987, with Pauline Stainer)
  • H.H.Wingate/Jewish Quarterly Poetry Award (1993)
