Books that inspired me to become a writer: Indirectly, it's hard to say. More directly, it was reading books by Maurice Sendak which opened my eyes to the possibilities of children's books.
My favourite author: Shakespeare
My ideal reading position: On a very comfortable sofa, with my feet up
My usual means of marking a place in a book: With a thin, cardboard bookmark...usually a freebie from a bookshop, though I do buy the occasional one for its beauty! I've got a great one now with a quote on it from Sam Goldwyn, the movie mogul: "I read part of it all the way through."
My favourite time of year: Late spring...May. Also October...
My favourite time of day: 5 pm when I usually stop work, go downstairs and start cooking...
My best time for working: Either 9-11.30 ish, or else 2-4.30 ish. Don't want to overdo it!
The first piece of work I was paid for was: An essay about the language and imagery of Marx's "Capital" which appeared in a US periodical called Monthly Review, in 1972 - I got $50.
My favourite TV show: Good drama (Our Friends in the North, Holding On, Clocking Off, etc) Late Review, and lots of movies. I also like Newsnight, and was a great Brookside fan, but feel it's going pear-shaped with amazing speed...
My favourite song: Please may I have four? 'Hotel California' by the Eagles; 'Don't think twice, it's all right' by Bob Dylan; 'Good Vibrations' by the Beach Boys; 'Yesterday' by the Beatles.
My favourite actor: Marlon Brando (male) Vanessa Redgrave (female)
The creature comfort I would most unwillingly relinquish: My bed
My favourite sweet food: All sort of cakes...strudel, chocolate, home-made meringues, eclairs...
My favourite savory food: Falafel, eaten on the street in Israel in a pitta full of salad, hummus and fiercely hot pepper sauce...
My typical bedtime is: Midnight, or round there...
My favourite year of childhood: Aged 9, I lived in Jesselton, North Borneo which looked like the adverts for Bacardi...I had a beach like that literally at the bottom of our garden.
My mousemat design: The cover of the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper album...
The tidiest place in my home is: My husband's filing cabinet and cupboard.

The working tool I would least like to do without: Pentel 0.07 black pen, and hardback notebooks with pretty covers...I'm a stationery freak!
