Everything But The Jacket

Guardian Unlimited Books | Review | Review: Tamar by Mal Peet

Jan Mark likes everything about Mal Peet's new novel, Tamar. Everything, that is, except the jacket. This is the book which I am currently reading myself, and for others who want to come to the book fresh I advise reading only the second half of Mark's review, the first half being an unnecessarily detailed precis of the plot.

Mal Peet's second novel is utterly unlike his first, Keeper, save in one respect: the quality of the writing. This sombre and distinguished book is as fine a piece of storytelling as you are likely to read this year. Why the publisher has chosen to issue it as a contender for the year's drabbest-looking paperback is beyond one's powers of conjecture.
