No harm in skipping pages! I prefer to call it 'editing'. I read Lord of the Rings aloud to my kids one winter - it would have been a lot less enjoyable and memorable for them if I had not edited out the more scholarly passages dealing with the history,language and customs of the various races of middle earth. Parents should not feel guilty about cutting to the chase when necessary.
