USATODAY.com - National Book Award brings more than praise
After Jeanne Birdsall's debut novel, The Penderwicks, won the award for young people's literature, Random House announced it was printing 20,000 more copies beyond the 40,000 already in print. Children don't buy children's books, but adults do. And that, Birdsall says, is where the award will most affect sales. Until now, she says, she has relied mostly on independent bookstores that have "hand-sold the book — one at a time."
David Fickling Books will publish The Penderwicks in the UK next year.
